Kwame Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician and revolutionary leader, was
instrumental in guiding his country, then known as the Gold Coast but now known
as Ghana, to independence in 1957. Nkrumah was Ghana's first prime minister and president, and to mark the country's transition into a state of full independence, he oversaw the construction of a massive public plaza that bears his name.
